Welcome back Cruisers!!! Over a week ago, the E3 conference began. As I mentioned in my first post, E3 is one of my favorite events of the year. From the latest gaming consoles to the latest in VR, E3 gives us a sneak peak into what the electronics entertainment industry is going to release. Ladies and gentlemen..I was ready for this. I was ready to have my eye holes rocked by the next iteration of games and consoles. But at the end of the presentations (which I streamed on Twitch and YouTube…no I wasn’t there), I was disappointed. My eye holes were thoroughly unrocked. Let’s break down what was presented…
The big news that came out of the Microsoft camp was the unveiling of the XBox X. And how did they unveil this new console? By having one of its engineers talk for an eternity about its specs. We were inundated with numbers, especially 4K. He and the rest of the presenters kept lobbing “4K” out there. I have to admit, when they showed gameplay of Forza 7, the graphics were impressive. But cool graphics are no excuse for what they premiered next. ANOTHER ASSASSIN’S CREED.
Assassin’s Creed Origins
Assassin’s Creed Origins takes place in the desert of ancient Egypt and tells the origins of the Assassins guild…club…organization… whatever. It’s your garden variety Assassin’s Creed game…except in 4K (cue applause).
State of Decay 2
This game looks kind of fun. There are a lot of zombies, you get to build your little community, decide who to align yourself with, and a host of other decisions. It’s like The Walking Dead, except you don’t have to see Rick Grimes mopey face (and the season finale won’t suck).
Microsoft had a long presentation with very few exciting moments. The only moment that left me astounded was the price…$499!!! THEY MUST’VE LOST THEIR WHOLE MIND!!! But for those without rent or a car note, this pricey console will roll out in November.
Ubisoft faired a little better than Microsoft, but just a little. They presented Mario & Rabbids for the Nintendo Switch. The game looks cute. I cannot say it was something to get worked up about but then we tripped and fell back into the desert and Assassin’s Creed Origins. They also showed The Crew 2 but it looked horrible. And then…..
SOUTH PARK…THE FRACTURED BUT WHOLE!
South Park: The Fractured But Whole
When they began the trailer for this game, I screamed like I was on fire. I don’t know why I was so excited, it previewed at two previous E3 events. They announced a date of Oct 7, 2017 for its release. If it does not come out on or before that time, Ubisoft can expect a strong letter (or at least Tweet) from yours truly. By the way, there is a mobile game coming out called South Park Destroyer.
Far Cry 5
I’m not really a Far Cry player (you have to use two thumbs) but one thing I have always liked about the franchise is the crazy bad guys. The guy in the purple suit in four was crazy with a capital C. Five looks like it has a new set of crazies that are even crazier.
Playstation’s presentation was so/so. There were a few interesting games and a lot of goofy VR.
Marvel vs. Capcom
They did not show gameplay of this fighting game. They showed some trailer and an ugly Chun Li. But the do have a story mode demo. I wish they would have shown some gameplay of the fighting.
Now, this looks good! Fighting and web-slinging. It looks fun. I just hope they have a good story to round out the game. We will see in 2018.
They’re doing some updates to Fallout 4 and Doom. Fallout 4 and Doom are doing VR stuff. Blah blah blah Fallout 4 and Doom. Wolfenstein 2 looked pretty good. There are also sequels to The Evil Within and Dishonored. All of this was presented in a theme park style video titled Bethesdaland. They could’ve saved themselves some time and effort and just did a digital event. They didn’t need an auditorium for that.
Super Mario Oddessy
I have not gotten a Nintendo Switch yet, but now I have a reason. And the reason is this…Mario’s hat has eyeballs. Super Mario Oddessy is coming out and it looks like a good time. The worlds look amazing and I can’t wait to play.
Nintendo also premiered a new Yoshi game. They also showed an adventure game called Fire Emblem Warriors, an installment to the Fire Emblem series.
Overall, this was not that great of an E3. There were a few “wow” moments, but I felt dissatisfied with the event a whole….a fractured but whole. Sorry.
So what’s next Cruisers?
Dragon Ball Super tournament begins…maybe…hopefully.
Until next time…Keep Cruisin’.
