Hi Everybody! I hope you’re Thanksgiving was awesome and full of delicious food. If you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope you are having an awesome holiday season! Speaking of the holiday season, I want to focus on joyous topics during this time of year. I would like to start out with Hunter x Hunter and one of my favorite anime relationships, the friendship between Gon and Killua. If we are lucky in life, we get to have one of these ride-or-die friendships. Gon and Killua’s friendship have qualities that we all look for in our relationships. Let’s look at this special bond between these two warriors. By the way, the show is based on a manga by Yoshihiro Togashi and appeared in Shonen Jump. Disclaimer: I am not reviewing the show (it’s freaking amazing!) so there will be spoilers.
Gon Freecs and Killua Zoldyk meet during the hunter’s exam. Gon is trying to become a hunter so he can find his father, an extremely famous hunter who is harder to track down than my eyeglasses when I first wake up in the morning. Killua takes the exam…..because he is bored! Yes, friends, Killua was tired of being a deadly assassin, hated the family business, and decides to take one of the hardest exams…..EVER!!!! When I’m bored, I watch tv, or take a nap, or go for a walk. This dude takes a deadly exam!
Anyway, it is during this exam that Gon and Killua meet and become instant buddies. It’s almost like they know that they are meant to be friends. It helps when you and the other person are going through a similar situation. They are both young, energetic, and independent boys going through the hunter’s exam.
Gon is a country bumpkin who is a little dumb. Killua is a cold-blooded ex-assassin who thinks he has to win every time. Does either one of them care? No. They didn’t judge each other’s pasts or lives, they just are friends who know each other in that moment. It is a beautiful thing. Most of this is because Gon is a super friendly guy. People just want to like him because he has an innocence and joy that makes him downright charming. Killua, on the other hand, has no time for you, me, or anyone. That’s another reason why their friendship is so astonishing. Killua is not what you’d call a people person. But, like everyone else, he is drawn to Gon.
They may be friends, but they are still boys who like to compete. As good friends should, they push each other to do better. There’s no bitter jealousy or resentment that puts a strain on their relationship. Good friends want to see you improve. They want to see you surpass them, and in return, they want to surpass you. Gon and Killua grow in skill and power, but not at the same pace. Killua picks things up faster than Gon. I like that the writers do not make this a cliche point of contention for these two. They usually have bigger fish to fry and have no time for pointless jealousy.
This aspect of their friendship is the one that had me deep in my feels the most. Those two kids are extremely supportive of one another. They fought fearsome opponents, especially the Chimera ants, and they had each other’s back. When Gon could not use nen (basically his powers), Killua protected him. When Killua returned to his family, Gon risked his life to reunite with him. Even when they went their separate ways (I’m trying not to tear up here), there was still an understanding that “if you need me, I will be there”. Here’s my interpretation of how their departure happened:
Killua: “Well I’m gonna go and take care of my split personality baby sister.”
Gon: “Ok. I’m gonna go up this super huge tree and talk to my dad who was never there for me.” “Best friends forever?”
Killua: “Best friends forever.”
[They turn and walk away looking sadder than sad]
[cue your’s truly weeping like a baby]
The best support a friend can give is being there for you when things are at their lowest. That is where Gon and Killua thrive as friends. Danger, injury, a hot date…nothing stops these two from supporting one another. Excuse me….I need a Kleenex.
Best x Friends
Hunter x Hunter is a great show. The characters are interesting, the villains are complex, there’s humor, sadness, great fights and a great opening theme song. But, for me what makes this show spectacular is Gon and Killua’s friendship. I want to model my friendships after Gon and Killua’s (not the hunting/killing part). I want to be seen as an accepting and supportive person who motivates my friends to be the best “them” they can be. What about you? What do you think of Gon and Killua’s friendship? Do you have a friendship like this one? Do you participate in hunter exams for fun? Let me know!
